How to Officiate a Wedding in Austria

As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Pastafarian minister officiating a wedding

The Short Version

Austria requires a civil ceremony at the Standesamt (Civil Registry Office) for a legal marriage. Only government officials can process legal marriages — religious ceremonies are optional and have no independent legal effect. Religious ceremonies can only take place after the civil ceremony.

FSM has notable history in Austria — Niko Alm’s famous colander driver’s license photo — but FSM was denied recognition as a religious organization. Doesn’t matter for your ceremony though. We do the ceremony, the government does the marriage.

How Marriage Works in Austria

  • Civil ceremony at the Standesamt (Civil Registry Office), performed by a Standesbeamte (civil registrar)
  • Ceremony conducted in German; translator required for non-German speakers
  • Two witnesses with valid photo ID required
  • Cost: ~€100–€300 for basic ceremony; off-site ceremonies more
  • Can book up to 6 months in advance
  • Documents: passport/ID, birth certificate, certificate of no impediment (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis), proof of residence
  • Foreign documents must be apostilled and translated by certified translator

No. Only Standesamt officials can process legal marriages. FSM was denied registration as a religious organization in Austria, and the case went all the way to the European Court of Human Rights, which ruled that Pastafarianism’s “purely satirical character” meant it cannot be considered a religion under Article 9 ECHR.

This ECtHR precedent is significant — and negative — for FSM recognition across Europe.

You Can Still Do This

The civil ceremony is often brief and administrative. Your Pastafarian ceremony is where the couple’s personality shines.

Get ordained: Get ordained with the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

  1. Talk to the couple — What do they want? Austria offers stunning venues.
  2. Write your script — Declaration of Intent, Pronouncement, personal touches
  3. Coordinate — Civil ceremony first (required by law), then your celebration
  4. Practice — Out loud, at least twice

Austria Tips

  • FSM has real history here — Niko Alm’s colander photo made international headlines in 2011
  • The ECtHR ruling against Pastafarianism originated partly from the Austrian case
  • Religious ceremonies are prohibited before the civil ceremony
  • Austria has beautiful Alpine, lakeside, and historic venues for ceremonies
  • The Standesamt may agree to off-site ceremonies for an additional fee
