How to Officiate a Wedding in Brazil

As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Pastafarian minister officiating a wedding

The Short Version

Legal marriage in Brazil goes through a Cartório de Registro Civil (Civil Registry Office). Religious marriages can gain legal effect if registered, but only through established, registered religious organizations. FSM ministers can’t handle legal marriages here.

The couple handles the civil process at the cartório, and you lead the celebration. We do the ceremony, the government does the marriage.

How Marriage Works in Brazil

  • Civil marriages performed at the Cartório de Registro Civil
  • Process starts with habilitação (qualification): submit documents → 15-day public posting → if no objections, ceremony scheduled
  • Two witnesses required at the ceremony
  • Timeline: ~30–45 days from filing to ceremony
  • Cost: R$200–R$500+ (varies by state)
  • Proxy marriage is legal — one party can appoint a representative
  • Religious marriages can acquire civil effects (casamento religioso com efeito civil) if registered, but this requires an established religious organization

No. Only cartório officials perform civil marriages. Religious marriages with civil effects require registration through established religious organizations, and FSM is not registered in Brazil.

You Can Still Do This

Many Brazilian couples have both a civil ceremony and a separate religious or social celebration. Your Pastafarian ceremony is the celebration.

Get ordained: Get ordained with the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

  1. Talk to the couple — What’s their vision? Brazilian weddings are often lively, festive celebrations.
  2. Write your script — Declaration of Intent, Pronouncement, personal touches
  3. Practice — Out loud, at least twice

Brazil Tips

  • The habilitação process takes 30–45 days — the couple needs to plan ahead
  • All foreign documents must be apostilled and sworn-translated into Portuguese
  • Non-Portuguese speakers need a sworn interpreter throughout the civil process
  • Brazil has broad constitutional religious freedom protections and a diverse religious landscape
  • The civil ceremony at the cartório can be brief — your ceremony is the main event
