As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

There are two things: the wedding ceremony, and the legal marriage. One is a ceremonial ritual — a celebration — and the other is paperwork. You’re leading the ceremony.
Ontario requires marriage officiants to be either registered through a recognized religious organization or appointed as a temporary marriage officiant through ServiceOntario. FSM online ordination alone isn’t enough for the legal side — but Ontario has a great option: one-day marriage officiant designation, which lets anyone officiate a specific wedding.
So the path is clear: you lead the wedding ceremony as an FSM minister, and either the couple handles the legal paperwork through the registry, or you apply for a temporary designation for that specific wedding. See the full Canada wedding guide for the big picture.
The couple asked you because they want you standing up there — not a stranger, not a professional, you. That means something. Here’s what you need to know:
It’s not as scary as you think. Most ceremonies are 5–15 minutes. The couple does most of the talking (vows, “I do”). You’re the guide.
At a minimum, your ceremony needs two elements:
Everything else — readings, vows, stories, jokes, Pastafarian blessings, the whole production — is optional and up to you and the couple.
The couple handles the marriage license. Here’s the Ontario-specific info:
ServiceOntario — Marriage License
toronto.ca/getting-married (Toronto) · ontario.ca (province-wide info)
| Marriage license fee | ~CAD $100–175 (varies by municipality; $140 in Toronto) |
| License valid for | 90 days |
| Waiting period | None |
| Witnesses | 2 |
| Online application | Yes |
| Residency required | No |
Ontario offers temporary marriage officiant appointments for specific weddings. This means you can apply through ServiceOntario to be authorized to solemnize one particular marriage. It’s a straightforward process — many couples go this route when they want a friend or family member to officiate.
This is separate from your FSM ordination. The ordination is about the ceremony and your role in it. The one-day designation is the government’s paperwork to make it legally binding.
