How to Officiate a Wedding in Denmark

As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Pastafarian minister officiating a wedding

The Short Version

Denmark recognizes civil and religious marriages, but only clergy of the state church (Evangelical Lutheran) or government-approved religious communities can officiate legally recognized marriages. FSM isn’t approved. The couple handles the legal marriage through a civil ceremony, and you lead the celebration. We do the ceremony, the government does the marriage.

How Marriage Works in Denmark

  • Civil marriages: performed by a municipal registrar, mayor, or authorized deputy
  • Religious marriages: by pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Church or ministers of approved religious communities
  • Apply for a certificate of marital status (prøvelsesattest) from the municipality or Agency of Family Law
  • No residency requirement — Denmark is extremely popular for international weddings
  • Two witnesses required (municipality can sometimes provide them)
  • Approval typically ~5 business days with complete documents
  • Marriage certificate issued immediately after ceremony
