How to Officiate a Wedding in Ireland

As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Pastafarian minister officiating a wedding

The Short Version

Ireland uses a registered solemniser system — only people on the official Register of Solemnisers can officiate legally recognized marriages. FSM applied to register solemnisers in Ireland and was denied. So FSM ministers can’t handle the legal side here.

But you can absolutely lead a beautiful Pastafarian wedding ceremony. The couple handles the legal marriage separately through a civil registrar. We do the ceremony, the government does the marriage.

How Marriage Works in Ireland

Legal marriage requires a ceremony performed by a registered solemniser, who can be:

  1. Religious solemnisers — nominated by approved religious bodies
  2. Civil solemnisers — HSE registrars
  3. Secular solemnisers — members of approved secular bodies (like the Humanist Association)

The couple must notify the Registrar at least 3 months before the ceremony and pay a notification fee (~€200). Two witnesses aged 18+ are required.

No. The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster applied to have solemnisers registered in Ireland and was denied by the Civil Registration Service. The CRS concluded that FSM’s beliefs were “negative” rather than “positive” — a distinction that advocacy groups like Atheist Ireland have argued is discriminatory and not found in the Civil Registration Act.

This is one of the few countries where FSM has been explicitly rejected.

You Can Still Do This

The couple can have a civil registrar handle the civil marriage ceremony (even a quick, minimal one), and then you lead the real celebration — the Pastafarian ceremony that everyone came for.

Your Ceremony

  1. Talk to the couple — What matters to them? Humor? Heart? Full Pastafarian regalia?
  2. Write your script — Declaration of Intent, Pronouncement, personal touches, Pastafarian blessings
  3. Practice — Out loud, slowly, at least twice
  4. Coordinate timing — Work with the couple on how the civil and Pastafarian ceremonies fit together

Ceremony Day

  • Bring: Your script (printed), ordination credentials, a black pen
  • Some couples do the civil ceremony privately and then have the Pastafarian ceremony as the main event
  • Others incorporate both into the same day at different times

Ireland Tips

  • FSM was explicitly denied solemniser registration — don’t try to pass off your ceremony as legally binding
  • The civil marriage ceremony can be very brief — some couples treat it as just the marriage registration step
  • 3-month notification requirement means the couple needs to plan ahead
  • Ireland has a strong tradition of creative, personal wedding ceremonies
  • The Humanist Association of Ireland has successfully registered secular solemnisers — FSM has not been as fortunate
