How to Officiate a Wedding in Mexico

As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Pastafarian minister officiating a wedding

The Short Version

Mexico requires a civil ceremony for legal marriage — performed by a government-appointed Civil Registry Judge. Religious ceremonies have zero legal effect. This is true across all 32 states, though specific requirements vary by state.

Your Pastafarian ceremony is the celebration. The couple handles the legal marriage through the civil registry. We do the ceremony, the government does the marriage.

How Marriage Works in Mexico

  • Civil marriages performed by a Juez del Registro Civil (Civil Registry Judge) at the Civil Registry Office
  • Marriage law varies by state — documents, fees, waiting periods, and witness requirements differ
  • 2–4 witnesses required (varies by state), all 18+ with valid ID
  • Cost: ~600 MXN (~US$30) at the registry; off-site ceremonies cost more
  • Same-sex marriage legal nationwide since 2022
  • Some states require blood tests; others have eliminated them

No minister of any religion can handle the legal marriage in Mexico. Only civil officials.

You Can Do This

Mexico is one of the world’s top destination wedding markets. Many couples — especially destination wedding couples — want a personalized ceremony separate from the civil formalities. That’s exactly your role.

Your Ceremony

  1. Talk to the couple — Beach wedding? Hacienda? Cenote? What’s the vibe?
  2. Write your script — Declaration of Intent, Pronouncement, personal stories, Pastafarian blessings
  3. Coordinate timing — Many couples do the civil ceremony separately (sometimes days before) and treat your ceremony as the main event
  4. Practice — Out loud, slowly, at least twice

Mexico Tips

  • Destination wedding capital — wedding ceremony officiants are very common and welcome
  • The civil ceremony is often a separate, smaller affair
  • Requirements vary by state — the couple should check with the local Registro Civil early
  • Foreigners need apostilled/translated documents and a certificate of no impediment
  • Popular states for weddings (Quintana Roo, Jalisco, Baja California Sur) are experienced with international couples
