How to Officiate a Wedding in South Africa

As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Pastafarian minister officiating a wedding

The Short Version

South Africa is one of the most promising countries for FSM marriage officiation outside the US. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) allows religious organizations to register and designate marriage officers who can perform legally binding marriages. The South African Secular Society has already done this successfully — proving that non-traditional organizations can get marriage authority here.

FSM ministers aren’t currently registered as marriage officers, but the pathway exists. In the meantime, the couple handles the legal marriage separately, and you lead the ceremony. We do the ceremony, the government does the marriage.

How Marriage Works in South Africa

South Africa has three marriage frameworks:

  1. Marriage Act (1961) — traditional civil/religious marriage
  2. Civil Union Act (2006) — marriage or civil partnerships for all couples regardless of sex
  3. Recognition of Customary Marriages Act (1998) — marriages under African customary law

Designated marriage officers can process legal marriages. They include: – Magistrates (by virtue of their office) – Religious marriage officers — ministers designated by the DHA after their organization registers and they pass a DHA examination (pass mark: 75%) – Civil Union officers under the Civil Union Act

Two witnesses (18+) required. The marriage officer submits paperwork to the DHA within 3 months.

Not yet — but potentially yes. The pathway:

  1. Register FSM as a religious/philosophical organization with the DHA
  2. FSM nominates candidates for marriage officer designation
  3. Candidates pass the DHA marriage exam (75% pass mark on the Marriage Act or Civil Union Act)
  4. Upon passing, they receive legal designation as marriage officers

The South African Secular Society has successfully done this under the Civil Union Act — demonstrating that non-traditional organizations can navigate this process.

You Can Still Do This Right Now

Even without DHA designation, you can lead a meaningful Pastafarian ceremony. The couple handles the legal side through a designated marriage officer.

Your Ceremony

  1. Talk to the couple — South Africa has incredible wedding venues. What’s their vision?
  2. Write your script — Declaration of Intent, Pronouncement, personal stories, Pastafarian blessings
  3. Coordinate — The couple may have a separate civil marriage ceremony with a designated marriage officer, or they might want help finding one who’s sympathetic
  4. Practice — Out loud, at least twice

South Africa Tips

  • Most viable path to legal FSM marriage authority outside the US — the DHA registration system is designed for this

  • Marriage officer fees vary: R500–R5,000+
