How to Officiate a Wedding in Spain

As a Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Pastafarian minister officiating a wedding

The Short Version

Spain recognizes both civil and religious marriages — but only religions with formal state agreements or notorio arraigo (deep-rooted) status can officiate legally recognized marriages. FSM has neither. The couple handles the legal marriage through a civil ceremony, and you lead the celebration. We do the ceremony, the government does the marriage.

How Marriage Works in Spain

  • Civil marriages: performed by a judge, mayor, justice of the peace, or designated municipal councilor
  • Religious marriages with legal effect: only by ministers of recognized religions — Catholic Church (Concordat), Protestant/Evangelical (FEREDE), Jewish (FCI), Islamic (CIE), plus religions with notorio arraigo status (LDS, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Buddhism, Orthodox)
  • File a expediente matrimonial at the Civil Registry, with a 21-day public posting period
  • Two witnesses required
  • Foreigners need proof of residence (empadronamiento) and certificate of no impediment

No. FSM does not have notorio arraigo status or a cooperation agreement with the Spanish state. Obtaining notorio arraigo requires demonstrating significant, established presence in Spanish society over many years — a very high bar.

You Can Still Do This

Spain is a massive destination wedding market. Many couples want a personalized ceremony separate from the civil formalities. That’s your role.

Get ordained: Get ordained with the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

  1. Talk to the couple — Destination wedding? Beach? Vineyard? What’s the vibe?
  2. Write your script — Declaration of Intent, Pronouncement, personal touches, Pastafarian flair
  3. Coordinate with the civil ceremony — Often done separately, sometimes days before
  4. Practice — Out loud, slowly

Spain Tips

  • 21-day posting period means the couple needs to plan the civil side well in advance
  • Spain is hugely popular for destination weddings — wedding ceremony officiants are common
  • The Catholic Church has a privileged position through the Concordat with the Holy See
  • Same-sex marriage legal since 2005
